Healthy Food Talk
September 21, 2010

Food! Mmmm yes we all love food. If you know me well or are around me longer than 2 hours you know that’s how often I eat. I guess I have a high metabolism + breast feeding. I know, I wont brag. Actually, it’s not always a fun thing.

Since having Jaidan we’ve been looking at REAL healthy foods, not just what you hear is “healthy”. I’m not into diets or low fat crap and I don’t care about calories. (The more the better, for me!) I want to eat foods that are real and that really are healthy. This has been a fun process for us & we feel better knowing that Jaidan is eating healthy too.

So first thing we have eliminated is boxed/canned foods. Do you know how much food we ate came from a box?! GASP! That cut out more than 50% of our Walmart shopping. We now skip like 13 aisles, haha. It’s weird and it looks like we have no food, but do not fear, we don’t starve! Take for instance, scalloped potatoes. Jared was sad that he would no longer be getting scalloped potatoes. No No No, you can still eat those!! I will just make them from scratch! (And he likes them better!) When you make your own food, you know the ingredients and what you are putting into your body! It is a little more time consuming but for me I look at that as an only option and to make time for it. After all, our health is pretty important!

Of course I still don’t know all the tricks and I’m learning new things every day. Like today I was reading in my ‘Cook this, Not that’ book. I thought that eating cous cous was better than rice and pasta. Nope! I’m better off eating enriched pasta. Boo, sigh, hiss. Cous cous is so yummy. 🙁 I should have known better, lol. Instead it says to try ‘Quinoa’. I JUST got comfortable saying cous cous and now I have to say ‘Quinoa’, sheesh! Anyway, the book says ‘it cooks like rice and makes an excellent substitute for common grains. There is something about ‘bulgur’ too, but we are taking it one step at a time right?

When we eat pasta, we’ve been doing half regular & half whole wheat. I’m pretty sure 98% of my body is made up of pasta because I’m addicted so I think doing half and half is better. This is about the only boxed foods we buy.

I’m having a hard time with breakfast. It’s the most important part so I know I need to get it right, but it’s soo hard! First of all, it’s early in the morning and I barely have enough time to brush my hair. This needs to be thought of the night before, right? Okay, I’m on it. 🙂 Stay away from sugar, starch & fat that will only suck the energy out of you!! And cereal should be a last resort. It’s not exactly healthy!

Some other things we are doing:
Not buying stuff with high fructose corn syrup (syrup, cool whip,
Like I said, nothing canned… fresh fruits and vegetables. This means we have to go to the store twice as often, but that’s okay!!
Fresh deli meat instead of pkged.

Fresh, local and seasonal foods are always best! Click here to search for local farmers markets. Farmers Markets

Neat trivia for the day:
Never store tomatoes in the refrigerator. And keep peaches, potatoes, onions, bread, garlic, and coffee out of there, too! Cold temperatures compromise the flavor and textures of these staples.
