We have started introducing foods at meal time! Now that he is 6 months old and his digestive system is more mature we have been offering some of the foods we are eating.
Jaidan had his 6 month checkup with his pediatrician yesterday. This is his normal pediatrician… from going to the meet and greet with the other dr. we realized how great our dr. is! He is very up to date on things, and at this appt he is finally going to work with us on vaccinations! We are doing selective/delayed & he wont be getting any until after he is a year old and only one at a time. Of course the dr. gives us the talk everytime we go in there, but I’m sticking with my instincts and combining information with that! Back to his appt…
He is 18lbs 12oz. & 26″. His head was in the 25%, height in the 50%, and weight in the 75%. That’s been consistent since birth so that’s good news. The dr. said if he continues to grow at this constant rate then he will be around 5’10”. Of course you can’t tell for sure, but I’m glad to know he has a fat chance of being bigger than mommy. 🙂
Back to his foods… we are doing what is called BLW. (Baby Led Weaning) It is a gradual method of milk to solids. You cook/prepare/cut the foods and offer it to them and they choose what they will eat. Of course there is much more to it than just that but right now Jaidan is in the ‘discover’ stage where he touches, licks, maybe gets a nibble off of what is in front of him. Even our pediatrician yesterday didn’t suggest purees because it’s all about texture. The thought is that they will already be used to normal foods and wont be picky eaters. Also the baby food is kind of in the same category as ‘junk food’. Of course I don’t care what other people feed their kids, this is just what works for us! =) I really thought I wanted to do purees and I was going to make it myself. =(Oh well… I did make some homemade apple sauce the other day and it was good. I think Jaidan liked it too! Oh and that 4 day wait rule between foods doesn’t apply. So that makes it easier to just offer him what we are having!
So far he has had avocado, banana, potato, zucchini, my homemade applesauce, cucumber, carrots. Funny story about the carrots. I put a tiny piece in his mouth… the next day it came out in his diaper… the same size I gave it to him. LoL And of course when I said he has ‘had’ all these things, it’s just what we’ve offered to him. Some stuff he never even put in his mouth, just smashed it in his hand or on the table. That’s all part of the learning process though! This is the avocado all smashed up.
Here he is with his banana. We will give him smaller pieces later on when he can actually eat it. We keep the peel on so he has something to hold on it.
