Our Garden!
March 17, 2013

Last September we made a keyhole garden in our backyard. Here’s a site that explains what it is if you are curious. We didn’t want to use our regular ground/soil because we have railroad ties on the tiers in our backyard & they would contaminate the vegetables & it wouldn’t be healthy, defeating our purpose of a garden.

Building our Keyhole Garden:

We lined the base with bricks that we had in our backyard

We purchased the cinder blocks from Home Depot. They were like $1.08 per block.

We went to the compost to get the FREE compost, some tree pieces, leaves, and anything else we could find to use to make our garden.

We even found this wire at the compost that we got for free. Jaidan is helping daddy tie it up to put the in the middle of our garden.

We started saving our vegetable and fruit peels for the compost!

We also bought these nice looking blocks to line the top of it with. We are a few short so we need to go get more.

We got some of these to go on top of our layers. Jaidan called them ‘dirt pillows’. LOL

Basically our finished project, aside from the rest of the top blocks.

Today we finally got to make our garden functional! (Only 6 months later ;))

What shall we plant?

plants 001

We are really new to all this so we decided to start some of our seeds inside until they are ready to transplant!

We had some seeds that I got either free or pretty dang cheap online last year. We also went to Lowe’s and picked out some more.

I thought this part would be really neat for Jaidan but he really didn’t want to get his hands dirty.

So Jaidan dropped the seeds in while I did the dirty part of covering it up. I’ll keep you updated when we get anything growing!

Now for the keyhole garden:

Jared really wanted these because he apparently ate them in Hawaii and loved them.

So we will give them a go!

We also did some onion bulbs!

Yay onions!

I used these big popsicle sticks to mark what and where we planted our vegetables.

Oh, there’s our compost!

plants 012

My big helper! We let him pick out something to plant and he picked the watermelon.

Filling up the pots with our fertilizer and top soil mixture

The plants are thirsty!

This is what we ended up planting and the notebook I will keep notes in.

I’ll keep you updated if/when we start seeing some action. I’m REALLY excited! 🙂
